Lares
Remote, unhurried, and deeply authentic, Lares represents the Andes as they actually are — not as tourism has packaged them. Its high-altitude communities, thermal springs, and textile traditions offer an encounter with Andean life that most travelers to Cusco never reach.
The Andes without the performance
Lares is chosen for journeys where human connection — not archaeological spectacle — is the primary therapeutic element. The communities along the route maintain weaving traditions, agricultural practices, and a relationship with the land that have changed little in centuries. For the right participant, this contact produces a recalibration that no citadel can replicate.
In Lares, the Andes are still inhabited the way they were designed to be. That aliveness is what makes it therapeutic.
Valleys, passes, and hot springs
The route moves through high Andean valleys, crosses passes above 4,400 meters, and descends through cloud forest to the Sacred Valley. Natural thermal springs at Lares village provide a recovery point mid-trek. The landscape is continuous and open — conditions that allow sustained reflection.
Connection as transformation
Within the Inka Method, Lares is used in journeys where the participant needs grounding in human reality rather than historical grandeur. The directness of life at altitude — its physical demands, its community structures, its relationship with the land — provides a contrast with modern systems that lands without needing explanation.
Routes and access
The Lares Trek typically begins from Lares village or Huarán, both accessible in 2 to 3 hours from Cusco. Three route variants cross different passes and communities: the Northern route via Quiswarani, the Central route through Cancha Cancha, and the Southern route via Patacancha. The trek ends in Ollantaytambo or connects to Aguas Calientes for Machu Picchu. We select the variant based on your physical profile, the communities most relevant to your journey, and the duration available — all determined during the application process.
Lares is available as a standalone trek or as the approach route to Machu Picchu. Both options are presented in your journey proposal.
